A living tradition,
carried forward
"In this tradition, music is not merely taught — it is transmitted. Note by note, breath by breath, over years of patient listening and devoted practice."
Sayan Ghosh began his journey as a music teacher in 2015 while working in the multimedia industry. In 2021, he left his profession entirely to devote himself to teaching — founding the Sayan Ghosh Academy as a space dedicated to the living tradition of Indian classical music on the sitar.
The academy now has two branches in West Bengal — one in his hometown of Konnagar in Hooghly district, and another in Dunlop, Kolkata — providing a welcoming and deeply personal learning environment for students aged 3 to 80.
Sayan combines group learning with individual care, ensuring every student receives guidance suited to their abilities and goals. The approach is rooted in the Guru-Shishya Parampara — the ancient oral transmission of knowledge through an intimate bond between teacher and student.
Each class is a living continuation of the Etawah–Imdadkhani Gharana, where knowledge is not merely transferred but breathed from one generation to the next.
The way
of learning
At Sayan Ghosh Academy, teaching is rooted in centuries of oral tradition — adapted thoughtfully for modern learners across every age and geography.
The Traditional Teaching
Learning is passed through an intimate bond between teacher and student. Every class is a living continuation of a centuries-old oral tradition rooted in the Etawah-Imdadkhani Gharana — where knowledge is not merely transferred but breathed from one generation to the next.
Individual Mentorship
Each student's progress is carefully observed and nurtured. Sayan guides with patience, meeting every learner where they are — whether a curious child of three, a professional seeking deeper practice, or a student halfway across the world on an online call.
Performance Culture
Students are actively encouraged to perform on stage, participate in concerts, and attend live music events. These experiences build artistic confidence, presence, and a deep sense of musical responsibility that no classroom alone can teach.
Gayaki Ang Style
The Etawah gharana demands that every note carry the weight of a sung syllable. Students are taught not just to play — but to speak through the instrument. The sitar becomes voice; technique becomes emotion; practice becomes devotion.
Our branches &
online programme
Two physical studios in West Bengal, and a robust online programme that reaches students across nine countries and counting.
Hooghly district — the founding studio, rooted in Bengal's classical music heritage. Offline classes, intensive practice, and intimate group sessions in Sayan's hometown.
The academy's city presence in north Kolkata — serving students from across the metropolitan area with a blend of beginner, intermediate, and advanced batches throughout the week.
"Every student who walks through these doors — in person or online — carries a piece of a tradition that is thousands of years old. I take that responsibility with full seriousness."
Academy projects
that inspire
Beyond individual lessons, the academy creates collective musical experiences — concerts, collaborative presentations, and platforms that give students visibility, purpose, and community.
A one-of-a-kind global concert during Covid-19 — connecting students from India, USA, UK and Bangladesh through Indian Classical Music, guided by Ustad Ghulam Abbas Khan and Sri Sayan Ghosh.
A large-scale spring celebration — 16 students from India & USA performing Raag Bahar and Rabindra Sangeet across a four-month rehearsal. Conceived, directed, and arranged entirely by Sayan Ghosh.
Where students find their voice. An open platform for student recordings — giving every learner the visibility, recognition, and permanent archive of musical growth they deserve.
Listening
Art of Listening was a one-of-a-kind global online concert organized by Sayan Ghosh Academy during the Covid-19 pandemic, connecting students from India and around the world through the timeless beauty of Indian Classical Music.
Guided by Ustad Ghulam Abbas Khan and Sri Sayan Ghosh, this remarkable event became a testament to dedication, learning, and the unifying power of music — proving that even distance cannot silence the harmony of hearts.
Bandana
Basant Bandana was a special musical project presented in 2024, celebrating the spirit of spring through Indian Classical Music and Rabindra Sangeet. Sixteen eligible and talented students from India and the USA participated under the guidance of Sayan Ghosh — who also conceived, directed, and arranged every composition himself.
The presentation featured Raag Bahar alongside Rabindra Sangeet compositions including Anandaloke Mangalaloke, Ay Tobe Sahachari, and Phule Phule Dhole Dhole — culminating in a performance that stands as one of the most significant accomplishments in the academy's history.
Avvyas
Raaga Avvyas is an initiative created with the vision of giving students a platform to express their musical learning. Through this open YouTube platform, students perform raaga-based compositions and share their recordings with a wider audience.
In many large academies, students often do not receive the visibility and recognition they deserve. Raaga Avvyas bridges that gap — offering each learner a chance to be seen, appreciated, and inspired. This initiative builds a collective archive of student growth, musical discipline, and devotion to the art of Indian classical music.
